BBC AMERICA’s critically-acclaimed co-production, Ripper Street, returns on Thursday, July 28, at 10/9c. The new season sees Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfadyen, Anna Karenina, Pride & Prejudice), Detective Inspector Bennet Drake (Jerome Flynn, Game of Thrones) and surgeon Captain Homer Jackson (Adam Rothenberg, The Immigrant) reunited to restore the peace of the blood-stained streets in London’s East End.

Picking up in in the summer of 1897 with Queen Victoria celebrating her diamond jubilee, Reid, who has retired from his detective work, finds himself drawn back to Whitechapel after discovering that an old friend is set to hang for a brutal murder he’s convinced he hasn’t committed. Meanwhile, Detective Inspector Bennet Drake has now risen to the Head of H Division, holding a position of trust and status in Whitechapel. Moreover, he’s now married to the love of his life, Rose Erskine (Charlene McKenna, Skins). Also returning this season is MyAnna Buring (Prey, Downton Abbey) as Jackson’s wife Long Susan Hart – now only weeks away from being executed for her part in the locomotive disaster that killed 55 people. Time is running out fast for Long Susan – will her husband find a way to help her escape the death sentence before it’s too late?

Ripper Street is a Tiger Aspect and Lookout Point production in association with Brown Bear Films for Amazon and BBC Worldwide, co-produced with BBC AMERICA.

Episode Guide

Episode One

Picking up three years after the culmination of season three, Edmund Reid is drawn back to Whitechapel to investigate a case made by Captain Homer Jackson and Detective Inspector Bennet Drake that has condemned his old friend, Isaac Bloom, to hang for a murder. Bloom is not the only one set for the rope: Long Susan Hart awaits her fate in Newgate Prison for her part in the Leman Street locomotive disaster. Does her husband have a plan to save her before it’s too late? Drake, meanwhile, looks into the case of an Indian man found murdered at the docks, as the forces of Britain’s colonial empire descend upon London to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

Episode Two

With the help of Major Al-Qadir, Detective Inspector Bennet Drake continues to investigate the mysterious murder of a young Indian-born lawyer. However, things get tricky for Drake and his men when it becomes clear that their investigation is stepping on Special Branch’s toes. Things aren’t going smoothly for Captain Homer Jackson and his wife Long Susan Hart either as their original plan to save her from the rope has fallen through. Can Jackson come up with another idea in time? Meanwhile, despite his better judgement, Edmund Reid continues to dig into the conviction of his old friend Isaac Bloom who is soon set to face the hangman’s gallows.

Episode Three

It is Reid’s first day back at H Division and the police force he once commanded is now under Inspector Drake’s authority. Despite his initial anxiety, it soon becomes clear that Reid’s investigative instinct is as sharp as ever. He is drawn to a distressed woman who claims to have lost her child from the workhouse, but when it becomes apparent that she is losing her wits he begins to question her testimony. Meanwhile, Susan fails to stay hidden in the dangerous dockside world of Abel Croker, and Rose begins to realize that becoming a mother to another woman’s child is no easy feat.

Episode Four

One month has passed since Inspector Reid returned to H Division. Drake and Reid are once more in harmony but it’s now Jackson’s turn to feel the pressure as a murder has links to a man who aided Long Susan’s escape from Newgate. Can Jackson help Reid and Drake solve the case without the truth about Susan emerging? The fate of a young woman depends on it. Meanwhile, Susan works to carve a place for herself at the docks. She begins to reveal more of her dark past to her villainous guardian, Abel Croker.

Episode Five

Just as it seems that Inspector Edmund Reid and Detective Inspector Bennet Drake have found their working dynamic once more, they are forced to engage with a difficult murder case that threatens to open old wounds. A young man has been found murdered and the investigation takes our heroes to the Thames Ironworks and into the brutal world of Victorian soccer. When the case connects to a young worker named Thomas Gower, a man who was saved from the hangman’s noose many years ago by Drake, fissures begin to emerge between Drake and Reid’s instincts.

Episode Six

When a young man close to Detective Inspector Bennet Drake’s heart is discovered murdered, it exacerbates the considerable rift that has developed between Inspector Edmund Reid and Drake, and it threatens to throw H Division as a whole into turmoil.
